The TITANIC - O2 Arena - London
Investigation date: 25th March 2011
The RMS Titanic was a British registered four funnelled ocean liner built for the transatlantic passenger and mail service between Southampton and New York.
Constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland Titanic was, on her maiden voyage, the largest vessel afloat.
On April 10th 1912 the Titanic sailed from Southampton with 2,200 passengers and crew, four days later the Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank. 1500 people died and 700 survived.
Southwest London Paranormal have been given a fantastic opportunity to carry out an investigation in London. We are the only team in this country to be allowed to do this.
This turned out to be a really great event, the team were elated when permission was granted to carry out this investigation.

Highlights of the night's investigation at the Titanic Exhibition - O2 Arena, London
TITANIC – The Artefact Exhibition
On 15th April 1912, the Titanic, the world’s largest ship sank after colliding with an iceberg whilst crossing the Atlantic Ocean from England to America, on its maiden voyage. This tragedy claimed more than 1500 lives and shock the world’s confidence in the infallibility of modern technology.
Almost 100 years later Titanic – The Artefact Exhibition (RMS Titanic, Inc.’s Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition) arrived at the O2 Arena in London and showcased more than 300 artefacts that have been retrieved from the Titanic’s debris fields. It also offered extensive room recreations from some of the rooms on board the ships.
Visitors were drawn back in time to 1912 upon entering the exhibition, by receiving a boarding pass of an actual passenger aboard the Titanic. They began their chronological journey through the life of Titanic, moving through the ship’s construction, to life on board, to the ill-fated sinking and amazing artefact rescue efforts. They were able to marvel at the re-created cabins and press their palms against an iceberg.
This exhibition was an educational and emotional experience and focused on the Titanic’s compelling human stories told through the authentic artefacts and exacting re-creations of the ships interior. Amongst the artefacts seen were delicate bottles of perfume, china bearing the logo of the White Star Line and many other objects collected from the wrecks site, offering poignant connections to lives abruptly ended, or forever changed by one of the world’s greatest maritime tragedies.
Visitors would then take their boarding pass to the memorial wall and here they would discover whether their passenger survived or perished.

Firstly, SouthWest London Paranormal would like to say a very big thank you to Jenny and the owners of the Exhibition for allowing us this fantastic opportunity to carry out a paranormal investigation on such a major event. We all know of the Titanic, but we know very little about those tragic last moments for the people, who suffered that night. The bravery and courage that were showed and the many sacrifices made by so many in conditions that we cannot truly comprehend. God bless them all.

Before the investigation began, the team were given the opportunity to have a look around the exhibition; this enabled them to get a feel for the place and to ascertain certain area of interest for later on in the evening.
The investigation began in the entrance room where the ships bell was displayed along with many photographs. Jim, Carol and some of the other members were immediately hit with unbelievable sadness and emotion contained within this area and it took a few moments for them to adjust to these feelings.
The temperature taken was 22c however; this was fluctuating up and down throughout the time the team were there. As the group turned the corner Jim stopped in his tracks as he was met by the spirit of a young boy. He was then able to identify the boy as there was some photographs hanging on the walls and this young boy was right at the beginning of them. Carol also saw him, as he started to walk around the group, watching everyone. Jim noticed that there was a chill in the area which seemed different than the rest of the room.
Jim, Carol, Helen and Jane all experienced a pain in the stomach. This was felt by them throughout the night’s investigation at different times and location. The pain was a feeling of being very bloated and totally full up.
Helen began to use the dowsing rods and asked the young boy to move the rods to where he was standing. The rods began to move, but they were all over the place and were not fixing in any particular are. Carol informed them that he was over by the wall and Jane felt very cold around the lower part of her body.
Jim says the boy wants to know what we are doing here. He is very shy, as you walk towards him, he walks away. A noise is then heard, but the group were unable to identify the cause, it could well have been the lights, which had to be kept on due to Health and Safety reasons. Some of the group heard footsteps and it was confirmed that there was no one else in the exhibition during this time.
Carol asks if anyone else was having the rocking motion, and many of the members felt the same. She thought it was perhaps special effects, but the staff members confirmed there was none. What was causing this feeling, was it the power of suggestion? Being amongst all the ships details, having it on our minds, or was there something else making us feel that way.
Unfortunately there were unable to find out the name of the young boy. Jim believed he was one of the first passengers to die. He asked him “Why he had not crossed over with the others” the little boy replied “That he could not find them” The team decided to return later and help him, Jim had a feeling that he was very lonely and wanted to follow the group around.
Some of team felt that the atmosphere within the area appeared heavy and a few were suffering from headaches. A strong smell of perfume could be detected and Jane was being drawn towards one of the bags that were on display. She was also worried about Jim who had become very emotional, to the point where he was crying. He was OK, but the emotion contained within this exhibition was higher than many had felt before.
Carol picked up on a lady who was following the team, she said that her name was Anna; she appeared very well to do. A noise was heard by everyone in the area, but the group could not determine where it was coming from.
As Carol had connected with the lady spirit Anna, it was decided to hold a séance to try and communicate further with her. As Jim began to call out a loud bang is heard, he ask for it to be repeated and again the noise was heard. He also asked if it was Anna who had made that noise and received a reply that it was.
Question: “Have you been here long?”
Question: “Can you touch one of us?”
Question: “Anna was your family with you on the Titanic?”
Question: “Do you mind me calling you darling?” Jane heard what sounded like a “No”
Carol informs the group that she is looking for her husband. She continued that “They didn’t know what was going on, they were full of fear” The group was also getting the word that was going to pop up a lot throughout the night “Why?”
Jim feels there are people rushing about all round the circle and Jane feels that someone is close to her. Jim asks Anna “What would you like us to do?” And Carol replied that she said “I don’t know”. There was again a feeling of sadness around and also a feeling of being lost.
Jim picks up on a gentleman who would have been in the band as he could see him playing a brass instrument; he thinks it was a trombone. He feels that there are so many spirits here, yet they are not communicating. He tells the team what he is seeing and feels that Carol is getting the same. It was like watching a film of a ghost ship with everybody walking around in a circle looking lost; Carol agrees.
Jane says she is again being pulled and Jim gets the message “Why did you disturb us?” Dawn tells the group that she keeps getting the name HIGTON. (Following the investigation the passenger list was check – there was no way of find Anna, but two names came close to Higton. First was HINTON – a crew member on board and also a Mr Hickman – who was a 2nd class passenger) Jane’s eyes were starting to feel very heavy and Lyn declared that she was not feeling too good.
The team then moved to an area which was a re-creation of the engine room within the Titanic.
As Carol and Jim entered this area they were drawn to one of the photographs displayed on the wall. This man was present in the room with the team, no names were shown by the photo’s, but Carol said “His name is Walter Binstead and he was a Trimmer” Both Jim and Carol agreed that he was not alone in this area, and they couldn’t understand what had happened. No one told them and they knew they had no chance to escape.
Walter told Jim “That he befriended a boy from First Class, who should not have been where he was and he couldn’t find him” Jim tells him that there are so many here that it is very hard. Walter tells Carol “That he can’t see him” she says he is so sad.
Question: “Why did you not cross over?” Answer: “It happened too quickly”
Jim feels he didn’t even know what was going on until it was too late. For some reason Walter wanted to know “How many were saved” and when told, he finds it hard to believe it.
While the team remain in this are Carol manages to get another name “STANBROOK”. But everyone would call him Brooky (Further research into the names, we found a Fireman by the name of Augustus Stanbrook who was on board the Titanic. He was 30 years of age and from York Street, Southampton. He perished on the ship and his body was later recovered (#316) and he is currently buried at Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Halifax, Nova Scotia)
Carol says that Brooky is coming forward and she can feel how upset he is. She can see that Walter is calling him. The team decide to move onto another area, but let both Walter and Brooky that they would return and help them cross over.
As the team proceed to another area Jim keeps feeling that so many spirits are walking around him, as if he was not there, but they were on deck. He picks up on a musician, but this is not the same man as previous and he want to play the violin. Carol can see the spirit standing behind Jim. Jim places his hands in the position as if he was playing the violin, but Carol informs him that he is not doing it right, the spirit says move your hands. Jim moves his hands to a different position and the spirit confirms that he is happy with this.
The team arrived at the re-created area of the ship’s bridge and a picture of the Captain Edward John Smith was hanging close by. Jim spoke of respect, guilt and going down with his ship. He knows that is what was always said should happen, but is unsure if it was true. Captain Smith did go down with the ship, but he could have left. This brave man did all he could and Jim was being told “It wasn’t my fault”. Carol said that he likes to be called Ted and that he was not grounded here, he comes back every now and then to check and keep watch.
There are a number of suggestions as to why the Titanic sunk, from blaming the captain, correcting the steering to late having steered the wrong way, to rivets being made of substandard iron, and of course the belief that the ship was unsinkable was, in part, due to the fact that the Titanic had sixteen watertight compartments. However, the compartments did not reach as high as they should have done. The White Star Line did not want them to go all the way up because this would have reduced living space in first class, but we were not there to judge, and leave that for people to make up their own minds.
Jim starts talking in a “posh” accent – “One does not mix with Second Class passengers” He does not know who that was; only that was what he was picking up. He is then drawn to a re-creation of a First Class cabin and he was being told “Don’t like that, it is not right. It wasn’t like this at all and is designed all wrong” Carol feels sad as the team now reach the end of the first half of the nights investigation.

The group start the second part of the investigation where they met the young boy. They began with a séance and found that the boy was already in their presence. There was a sense of excitement about him and they could feel the energy surrounding them. Jim calls out and he is told “To get on with it” He asked the team if anyone can hear the sound of what appears to be creaky floorboards, but no one can.
Jim can feel that there are many spirits present, some are unsure as to what to do. The young boy has gone, he moved towards Carol and back to Jim. They are still getting the feeling of “Why”. Jim has a pain in his leg and Jane feels that her legs are on fire and they are so hot.
As they move away from this area Jim hears “Oiy come here?” Jane calls out for them to come forward. Carol tells them that this man has nothing to do with the Titanic. Jim asks if he is in the military or has something to do with security. He then says he is a Police Officer and describes what he can see – he is a Police Officer from many years back, with a tunic done right up around the neck, when the bobby on the beat had to dress to convey a certain image, he put the time period around the early 1900’s. Carol agrees with this and says he patrols the area. Jane asks “Does he want to move on?” , but told that he is happy here doing what he wants and loves doing. Carol says that’s not his job looking after the Titanic or anything to do with the O2 Arena.
Jim can hear music and it was a waltz by Johann Strauss and he feels that he would like to dance – it is to be noted that Jim has two left feet. Jane calls out to him and he is not responding as continues to pace up and down and around and around. He has no idea why he did that and he could not hear Jane calling, but felt he had to walk around.
The group decided to try another séance as things appeared very busy around them. After forming a circle and focusing Jim allowed a spirit to channel through him. He suddenly asks “What the bloody hell are you doing?”
Jane asks “Who are you, what is your name?”
The spirit replies “I asked what the bloody hell are you doing?”
“We have come to talk to you”
“Are you completely stupid? I asked a question, what are you doing here”
Jane standing next to Jim replies again “I’ve told you we have come to talk to you. What is your name? You’re quite rude aren’t you?”
The spirit then says “Why were you waving your arms in the air?”
Question: “To build up energy to help you. I guess you were a First Class passenger” Answer: “No”
Question: “Were you a Second Class passenger? Were you here with your wife?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Were you on your own then?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you go down with the ship? Do you know what happened?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “How old are you?”
Question: “We came here to talk to you” Answer: “Why”
Question: “Is your name Jonathan?” Answer: “People call me Johnny”
Question: “Johnny what?”
Jim then returns from his trance and tells the group he is getting something similar to Hartwell, or Hartley. (After checking the records, the closest name to this was a Wallace Hartley. There was a Hartnell, but his first name did not begin with a J)
The team moved to another area within the exhibition and began another séance. Jim and Carol felt that there was so many spirits still around them. Mac called out asking “If they can say something or do something”. Jim receives the message “Get on with it”. After a while most of the team feel the energy building up between them.
Parts of the area made some of the members feel tired and depressed. There was also a smell of smoke. Jim could see a lady standing watching them – he felt she was a First Class passenger by the way she looks. Jim continues to call out and feels pain around his legs and lower back, it felt as though someone had swept his feet away. Other members were also suffering with this pain.
Mac could hear rustling behind Jim and Carol begins to be affected by one of the spirits coming close to her. She receives the name Patrick and says “Patrick smells”. Following this séance the investigation had to finish due to time restrictions.

Conclusion
There was a lot that happened during the night, but unfortunately due to the noise levels from the lights and other power sources, nothing was picked up on the digital recorders.
SouthWest London Paranormal group enjoyed the night’s investigation and a big thank you to our host Jenny who arranged this event. Everyone was taken aback by the amount of sadness that was felt throughout the evening. The question “Why” was constantly asked and it can only be guessed that is why it happened.
The group were able to help a number of souls cross over, but felt that there were many more that were just not sure. Some of what was picked up was not lost souls, but the imprint they left behind. It also goes without saying that in those days, First Class meant you had more of a chance of being saved. There were also some souls that still could not accept it had happened.
As can be seen from this report, we did get some names of people on board. Unfortunately no EVP’s could be caught on tape.
Our love and hearts go out to all those lost of the Titanic and all of their families.
