The Ostrich Inn - Colnbrook
Investigation Date: 2nd February 2013
The Ostrich Inn is situated in the ancient village of Colnbrook and was once a popular coaching inn for the London to Bath stagecoach route. Aside from the many ghosts reported at the Ostrich Inn, it is also claimed to be the third oldest inn, this is based on documents and records that date back to 1165, and is the first pub in England to be featured in the novel ‘Thomas Of Reading‘, written by the late 16th century author Thomas Deloney, which features former landlord Jarman and his murderous ways.

Believed to of taken place in the 1300s, the murders that Jarman committed were on weary travellers looking to change their clothes into something more fitting for their appearances before the monarch at Windsor Castle. Many of these travellers carried vast sums of money, something that would seal their fate with the murderous Jarman.
Over time, Jarman devised an elaborate method for killing the unsuspecting travelers by means of plying them with strong drink and offering them his ‘best room’. Once the victim had settled down to bed and once Jarman was sure they were asleep he would remove two bolts in the ceiling below the upstairs bed. This would cause the bed to tilt down at a 45 degree angle and the victim to slide out of the bed and into a vat of boiling fat, killing the victim quickly. Jarman would then take the victims belongings and sell their horse and clothes to unquestioning gypsies. Jarman would then dispose of the victim’s corpse in the nearby river.
Jarmans fate however, would be sealed after many years when one traveller climbed into bed only to get out again soon after to use the chamber pot only to see the head of the bed tilting down and the boiling vat of fat below. The man’s shouts awoke other guests and this was the beginning of the end for Jarman.

We had been looking forward to this one as it was the first of the year that we were able to do, we knew some of the alleged happenings and hoped to be able to either prove or disprove the happenings. Things were not made easy my the landlord who had warned us that the spirits there did not like people who come and mucked about, this comes from a man who says he is not psychic, but then goes to sing at the top of his voice with no one in the pub, I really did feel this man looked at the whole thing as easy money and a joke, even though he was able to confirm a lot of what we found with the history of the place, and what other groups had found.
To start with we split up in to two groups one team in the large front facing room, and the other covering the hallway and the bedroom where a lot had been reported over the years due to what is said to have happened in that room.
Team 1
Jane’s team in the bedroom, Medium Bobby Lockwood
The first thing they picked up was the very high K2 readings, which was later checked with the EMF, this is never a good sign as it can cause hallucinations.
Members of the start to have headaches, Jane says she is not feeling too good, and a tapping is heard, but could be coming from the window.
Jane calls out and whistles to get a reply, but nothing there is lots of outside noise, Jane complains says she is really feeling sick now and does not like the room.
Sounds are still being heard, then Jane bangs and asks for it to be repeated which seems too happened heard by Bobby.
Bobby says he is picking up on an old lady standing near the window at this point an EVP was picked up it sounds like ‘I beg to no one’ this clip is listed (Inn 1) please make up your own mind.

The temperature keeps going up and down for now reason
The team starts a séance, before they start Jane asks how they are feeling some are still complaining of feeling funny, and very hot.
Bobby calls out for spirit to make themselves known by making a sound or touching one of them.
Jane says as she looks at Nickki and it looks like the is a light above her head, she can’t see what colour it is, Bobby says he is still aware of the lady, but feels he is being pulled elsewhere.
Bobby says he feels there should be a door in a different position to what it is.
Jane feels there is someone with Nickki, and one of the team see a light come across the room from Bobby towards Nickki.
They keep feeling a breeze coming between them,
Bobby asks the team to swap around to see if the light follows Nickki or stays where it is.
It was not seen again, after a while a noise is heard and the team are unsure if it was someone outside or not, there was also a meow heard that come behind Bobby, but no cat was found, the landlord when asked didn’t not know of any cat.
They decide to try table tipping, as not much was happening, but decide to try the human pendulum first
Mark stands in the middle, (what happens here is one person becomes the pendulum, with someone who stands in front and behind to catch them, a test question is asked to prove that the pendulum does not respond on their knowledge, and no one else would know.
Jane asks spirit to move Mark backwards or forwards, Mark moves.
Jane than asks if they could push Mark forward for yes, backwards for no.

(The Landlord tells us later that a baby was born and the child went through the window to its death)
Bobby says there was a little boy in the hall way and it was following Jim
Team 1 in the ladies toilet upstairs where reports of activity had been reported.
There was a feeling of not being wanted there, Bobby did not like it, he feels it is not a nice place, he says he feels he wants to cry, the feeling of dread.
They call out and here the K2 is not showing anything other than a green light
They start by using the dowsing rods with crossing for yes, apart for no.
Jane calls out and the rods move, Jane says her head hurts like it was hit, she asks the spirit but the answer is no.

Do you want any of us to leave? Yes
Jane asks can you point the rods to the person you want to leave? Nothing
Jane asks do you want me to leave? Yes

Jane says she still feels like she had a blow to her head

After it went quiet they returned the bedroom where they picked up on another man but nothing much happened.
Team 1 now in main room upstairs again they find the K2 meter is no good due to the very high EMF readings.
Jane asks Bobby if he is picking up on anything, but he is not, a lot of noise is coming from downstairs which is making it harder.
To start off there is too much noise for me to hear clearly on the recorder.
They appear to use the Ouija board, but it’s hard to hear, then they try a séance
Mark says someone touches his leg thinking its Jane but Jane points out she couldn’t Bobby says there is movement in the chair in the corner near the big mirror like someone moving up and down.
Bobby’s calls out for spirit to come forward, he says he hears a whistle but others are distracted by the noise from downstairs and as the pub is shut they wonder why the landlord has to make so much noise.
They decide to try the pendulum, not the human one but crystal, many have tried this, and it’s not easy and very easy to get it wrong, but always worth a go
After sometime they get a movement going from side to side, and stopping they establish a yes and no system
Are there any male spirits? Yes
They ask how many are there it swings on 4
They find that there are two females there that did not work there, but died there
They try asking the spirit to move three pendulums, but the Landlord starts acting an idiot and starts screaming out some song, which was making it hard to hear and concentrate, it was like he was doing it on purpose.
They do find that the spirit lady was older than 36, but there was too much talking to make out who was asking questions and what the answers were.
They asked if she died in a fire, but the pendulums swung in different directions,
They asked if she died in something other than fire, yes
Was it her that was doing this to Bobby, no.
Shelia asked if she was a well to do lady, yes
Do you like the Inn as it is now, no
Nickki thought she saw someone standing near the corner of the room near the mirror, (this was also reported from the other team)
Footsteps are heard outside the room, but could still have been someone from downstairs
They picked up on a male spirit who did not die, work or live there, who seemed to just liked to visit.

Does she like ring a ring of roses? Yes very strong

(This was confirmed by the landlord that there is a report of a young child going out of the window to her death
They try a name that Bobby gets Anna Marie, or Ann Marie, they seem sure the name of the young child sounded like this
They are told by the male spirit that it was accident
Was her mother with her? Yes
Were they travelling by their selves? Yes
Was her mother murdered? Yes
The team feel that the mother would have been the victim of the Old Landlord and the child tried to escape from the window.
Is her mother here? No
They try to get Ann Marie to come and play by singing Ring a Ring of roses
They ask would she like them to sing again. Yes
With the whole team together they form a séance where Jim asks for the child to be taken, as she said she wanted to be with her mother and father, after a short while Jim feels they were successful.
The whole team work together at this point, and try downstairs which apart from some strange feelings nothing happened and they returned upstairs
Team 2
They check the K2 meter, and the EMF and find that the energy is far too powerful as it stays on, they find this is not down to anything spiritual but the wiring, Jim also wonders how much this has affected what people see as this much energy could cause headaches and seeing things.
We start a séance after a short time Jim feels he is being pushed towards the door
Helen says there is an old lady sitting in the corner near the mirror, she also feels that there are spirit people standing around us watching.
Still in the séance Jim goes in to trance the team ask for a name, but he starts to back away as if scared. They feel this could be female.
Then as quick as it started Jim was back he said that he felt the spirit person was very scared and just wanted to get away from us.
Jim keeps the séance together and calls out he then picks up a strange smell, but could not place it. Jim asks for spirit to touch one of us, Mac says she feels someone close to her, and feels like someone breathe on her
Jim says he feels like he is being pushed, Jim goes back in trance and in a stern voice says
‘You should not have come, you should have listened’ Mac asks who it is, are you the landlord, the answer is not clear.
Mac asks for a noise to be made, but again noise from downstairs and it becomes very hard to hear anything happening, so Jim asks for spirit and the spirit of the landlord to push someone other than him.

Denise says she feels that there may be too many and feels that the spirit would like to pick on her only, so she goes and sits in the chair near the mirror.
We now try the Ouija board after Jim had opened it in the correct way, they ask for spirit to come forward, after a while Helen says she feels there are children who maybe scared of another spirit.
One of the team says she feels it has gone very cold behind her, Jim says it could be someone there
Jim says he is picking up on a very negative energy in the room, and the feeling they are not wanted
Jim says he is getting a vision of someone sitting down drinking tea with a finger sticking up alongside the cup, and is looking at Zoe, as if Zoe should be sitting down
Jim says he feels there has been a lot of death apart from the stuff he knew
There seemed a lot of pushing and shoving around them
Jim talks of a small room not the one they are in, and it feels like they are trapped locked in, then Jim’s hand starts to twist away
I hear sounds but unsure if it’s the team or something picked up on the recorder
They move to the other end as Mac and others feel there is someone there
They move to another room
Jim starts by called out for spirit to make themselves known, Jim says he feels like someone was touching his hair, he also hears a noise near the window which had been heard but could have been vibration
One of the team say that as they look at Jim he looks like a thin man, and old
Jim feels like someone touched his leg and checks with the team, but it wasn’t any of them Jim sees someone stands near Zoe and Emma, and asks them to come forward he says they look about 5’6 in height, and he now has a pain in his chest it also looks like Zoe is moving her hands, but she says she is not.
Jim feels the death in this room, which means it lives up to its reputation, they feel like they are being surrounded
Jim feels there at least 4 or more Helen feels 5/6 spirits in the room, a shadow moves across the room.
One of the team feels someone push their arm
Most of the team notice the camcorder starts to move on its own, the team watch as it moves from side to side no one is near this and it continues for some time.
Jim asks if anyone can see what he is seeing, he is seeing a female Helen says she can see a lady she asks if she has something on her head like a hat, Jim says not a hat, how about Bonnet, Helen confirms and says she is all in black
Mac says one side of her and her leg is freezing
Helen sees someone in front of us moving around making a noise
There is a tapping noise, which is repeated when Denise asks for it, but it does not continue
Helen hears breathing
One of the team I think its Sheree, says she can see a man standing there, Helen confirms it
Jim points out that something that is hanging from a box is now moving the team see this, but this could have been from the window.
Jim calls out and calls the nasty spirit of the landlord who had been felt in the room, there was a nasty feeling in the room, Jim says he is cold and Helen says he does not like it that we are standing up to him. He continues to try and upset the girls in the team, but gets no where
His shadow was seen by a few of the team as he crossed in front of us and around us, we believe that this Landlord had murdered around 60 people from this room, it is said he dropped them through the floor and the slid down into boiling fat, just so he could rob them.
Jim says he understands about the murders and why the room would feel this way, but he feels there was more to it, he feels there was rape and
Jim calls out to try and get some of the spirit people to step forward saying he was not a problem, Helen says she feels he is saying you have no idea.
Noise are heard but not to order
We tried a few more experiments but got nothing, downstairs was a waste of time
We try the ladies toilet but apart from bad feelings and the feeling of a lady present there was nothing
We found on the night that using our equipment here was a waste of time because of the amount of noise, and high EMF readings caused by non paranormal means, the recordings were hard to hear thanks to the landlord.
I do believe this Inn has some very unhappy spirits around, but not as many as you may think.
I would like to point out that this is what we felt and picked up on the night, yes some of this could be explained the building was very old, it was cold yet hot in some rooms so that would cause the building to moan, there was a lot of noise from the landlord, and the power of suggestion could have played a part, and unlike most of the places we visit we were aware of some of the history of the Inn, so this could have been putting the pieces together. It was not a case of researching but as soon as you said anything about the Inn to people they knew of the alleged hauntings As you can see unlike most teams we tell it as it is, and leave you to decide.

One of the team says she feels it has gone very cold behind her, Jim says it could be someone there
Jim says he is picking up on a very negative energy in the room, and the feeling they are not wanted
Jim says he is getting a vision of someone sitting down drinking tea with a finger sticking up alongside the cup, and is looking at Zoe, as if Zoe should be sitting down
Jim says he feels there has been a lot of death apart from the stuff he knew
There seemed a lot of pushing and shoving around them
Jim talks of a small room not the one they are in, and it feels like they are trapped locked in, then Jim’s hand starts to twist away
I hear sounds but unsure if it’s the team or something picked up on the recorder
They move to the other end as Mac and others feel there is someone there
They move to another room
Jim starts by called out for spirit to make themselves known, Jim says he feels like someone was touching his hair, he also hears a noise near the window which had been heard but could have been vibration
One of the team say that as they look at Jim he looks like a thin man, and old
Jim feels like someone touched his leg and checks with the team, but it wasn’t any of them Jim sees someone stands near Zoe and Emma, and asks them to come forward he says they look about 5’6 in height, and he now has a pain in his chest it also looks like Zoe is moving her hands, but she says she is not.
Jim feels the death in this room, which means it lives up to its reputation, they feel like they are being surrounded
Jim feels there at least 4 or more Helen feels 5/6 spirits in the room, a shadow moves across the room.
One of the team feels someone push their arm
Most of the team notice the camcorder starts to move on its own, the team watch as it moves from side to side no one is near this and it continues for some time.
Jim asks if anyone can see what he is seeing, he is seeing a female Helen says she can see a lady she asks if she has something on her head like a hat, Jim says not a hat, how about Bonnet, Helen confirms and says she is all in black
Mac says one side of her and her leg is freezing
Helen sees someone in front of us moving around making a noise
There is a tapping noise, which is repeated when Denise asks for it, but it does not continue
Helen hears breathing
One of the team I think its Sheree, says she can see a man standing there, Helen confirms it
Jim points out that something that is hanging from a box is now moving the team see this, but this could have been from the window.
Jim calls out and calls the nasty spirit of the landlord who had been felt in the room, there was a nasty feeling in the room, Jim says he is cold and Helen says he does not like it that we are standing up to him. He continues to try and upset the girls in the team, but gets no where
His shadow was seen by a few of the team as he crossed in front of us and around us, we believe that this Landlord had murdered around 60 people from this room, it is said he dropped them through the floor and the slid down into boiling fat, just so he could rob them.
Jim says he understands about the murders and why the room would feel this way, but he feels there was more to it, he feels there was rape and
Jim calls out to try and get some of the spirit people to step forward saying he was not a problem, Helen says she feels he is saying you have no idea.
Noise are heard but not to order
We tried a few more experiments but got nothing, downstairs was a waste of time
We try the ladies toilet but apart from bad feelings and the feeling of a lady present there was nothing
We found on the night that using our equipment here was a waste of time because of the amount of noise, and high EMF readings caused by non paranormal means, the recordings were hard to hear thanks to the landlord.
I do believe this Inn has some very unhappy spirits around, but not as many as you may think.
I would like to point out that this is what we felt and picked up on the night, yes some of this could be explained the building was very old, it was cold yet hot in some rooms so that would cause the building to moan, there was a lot of noise from the landlord, and the power of suggestion could have played a part, and unlike most of the places we visit we were aware of some of the history of the Inn, so this could have been putting the pieces together. It was not a case of researching but as soon as you said anything about the Inn to people they knew of the alleged hauntings As you can see unlike most teams we tell it as it is, and leave you to decide.

In my option the Ostrich Inn was not as active as reported. Not to say we didn't experience some activity, maybe if we had more access to other areas of the Inn we could have got a lot more?? Wouldn't want to go back.
Jane Taylor The ostrich inn was really a bit of a let down really. We all seemed to suffer from headaches. We picked up on a young girl had had a baby. In the ladies toilets we used the rods and picked up on a gentleman who didn't like me and wanted me out claiming I looked like his wife. We also picked up on a little girl age 3 who had fallen out the window and died and her mother had been murdered by Mr. Jarman .we passed her to the little to be with her parents. We all did a séance and Jim picked up on a gentleman called Tommy he wanted us to cross a young girl and her mother which we did but Tommy didn't want to go. Not really much more happened really not helped by the very inconsiderate manager blaring out music so it was very hard to concentrate. All in all it was over rated. Would I go back I can safely say I wouldn't waste my time however we did manage to help some spirits cross over which is priceless.

A full report on this investigation will be on the website within a couple of weeks, briefly I will say that this was an OK place a little over rated. For sure there is Paranormal activity taking place and we were able to find out things that we did not know, such as names and what happened. We were very unhappy with the landlord on the night he had warned us that he would throw us out is we were not professorial, which we always are, and he spends the evening mucking around being very unprofessional.
However a warning for anyone wanting to go here, there are very high K2 and EMF readings upstairs, this is known to cause headaches, and Hallucinations. The floor is also all over the place which makes you feel as if you’re being pushed, and in places a little giddy, so not is all it seems. Hopefully when i have looked and all the recordings we may have something, but a lot of what happened could be explained.
Having said that we had a good night, would I return hmm if I was invited for a good reason, maybe other than that no, would I recommend it yes, but don't get your hopes too high, VERY over rated.
Charlotte Jacomellii For me the Ostrich Inn was not as active as I was hoping for. I think the noise from people in the bar below did not help. As soon as the bar closed we got some more activity. Mediums picked up on stuff that was proved to be correct so that was good. Lovely Inn but I would not be in a hurry to return.

I had high hopes of the Ostrich Inn but it seems to be a location that is cashing in on his history. Whilst that is fair enough I felt the fact that we were required to be respectful and were warned that if we misbehaved we would be asked to leave I certainly think we were not shown any respect whatsoever. Late night karaoke is not conducive to paranormal investigations. The Inn itself has been so heavily renovated it has lost so much of its character.
However on entering the big room we were based in I felt drawn to the large chair on the corner in front of the mirror. I felt repeatedly that I saw movement from the bar area (that was originally locked) later in the evening I tried a form of scrying with Mac and saw the face of a tiny, frail old lady the most notable features were the bags under her eyes, - that was very interesting but when we repeated the same again later nothing happened. I took a couple of interesting. I did have a incident early in the evening where I felt like my chest was being kneeled on by a heavy person but that soon passed.
In the locked bar area Sam and I tried using a Ouija board and believe we spoke to a male whose name began with G. However the Ouija board soon stopped communicating. In this room a number of People felt very uncomfortable and Jim picked up on some unpleasant individual.
Would I go back to the Ostrich Inn -absolutely not and for me until the staff treats paranormal groups with a bit more respect I would recommend that other groups Don’t go either! (and I have never said that about any other location)
But its always lovely to see the gang and lovely to meet some new people too.
Bobby Psychic-Medium Lockwood A great bunch of people that had respect for spirit but a landlord that had no respect for us searching for the truth, there is something at the ostrich inn as I think we all had personal experiences but as to how much is fabricated history or emf abnormalities is anyone's guess, headaches and pains in people's faces and bodies could of been anything but paranormal, the loft area was sealed off. By a giant ostrich and we all seemed to want to go downstairs into a basement area....
Was a good night, but not as good as I hoped for, I would return but not in no hurry, to anyone thinking of going, investigate then pay otherwise you might leave rather angry... No thanks to the landlord..

Helen Gell Sadly The Ostrich Inn was not as good as was hoped, as Denise said the land lord was cashing in on it's history. We tried our best & gave it everything we had, but with the noise from the pub & road it was hard to tell if we were getting anything. Things improved once the pub had closed but still it wasn't as active as was expected. Would I go again? No. & to be honest I wasn't too impressed with the Landlord, a tad disrespectful to his paying guests # Us!

I had high hopes for this place. I didn't know anything about the place other than it was the UKs 3rd oldest coaching inn. On arrival I was surprised on the size of the place. From outside it looked quite large, but inside was only a handful of rooms.
I experiences headaches, being pushed and chest pain during the investigation, but as others have said there were high levels of EMF readings and uneven floors so perhaps some of this was down to that.
We had some responses to the Ouija board and the human pendulum which were interesting and Jim had a guy, Tommy, come through him that turned out to be the downfall of the previous landlord which proved quite interesting.
Would I go back? I don't think so. The landlord didn't respect that we needed relative quiet by getting the karaoke machine out whilst we were trying to do a séance. Not professional. There are so many other places to go to that I rather go to other places first
