PRIVATE INVESTIGATION
The team arrived at the location just before 9.00pm. There was great excitement amongst the team, as they had never investigation a location of this size and had no idea of the expectation before them. According to the staff, this hotel had never been properly investigated before, so this was indeed a great and special occasion for the team.
SouthWest London Paranormal would like to take this opportunity to thank our hosts for agreeing to the investigation and a special thank you to Angela for all her help in setting this up.
History of the Hotel
It was originally built as a private Country House during the 17th century. It was during this period that Oliver Cromwell came to stay. The estate at this time was over 100 acres and according to local history books, “contained the large freshwater lake with a small but beautiful weir, where it overflowed as a cascade, into the smaller lake on its way to the sea” (All of this is still in evidence).
Like some Historical English Houses, this one is not without its haunted chamber. A former owner is said to have kept his daughter confined in one of the principle bedrooms, owing to the lady having become “enamoured of a certain knight”. Marks made by her fingernails on the door in her frantic efforts to escape before dying of starvation were visible for many years. Her spirit may still walk the landing at the hour of midnight. Nearby stands a “haunted oak”, her father stood here to gaze upon her confinement and revel in her suffering.
A monument of mystery – with no inscription, or name stands in the grounds. It is believed to mark the position at which a former owner’s daughter fell from her horse and was killed.

Plus four staff from the location
Team 1
As the team arrived at the first room Jim notice a lady vacuuming the hallway. She appeared to be from the era of the Second World War, by the way that she was dressed. The vacuum she was using was an old upright version with a brown bag on the back.
1st Floor - Bedroom No 44
The temperature when the team entered the room was recorded at 24.5c.
Upon entering the room the team began by just looking around and settling down, whilst this was happening the handle on the door to the bedroom moved, the outside area was checked in case someone was in the corridor, but nothing could be found. Jim was then drawn into the bathroom and the round window. He felt that as if he was looking down at others and he didn’t like the feeling. He asked if anyone else could feel anything. It appeared very quiet and the group continued to stand and listen as Jim began to call out to any spirits present.
Jim feels like someone had just walked past him. Some of the other team members also heard some strange noises, which could well have been the other team who were investigating downstairs. Jim picks up on a female spirit who appears to be in her twenties. He says that she is unhappy and asks the staff that are present, if they know about the bed? He is told that it has been reported that the pillows are thrown off the bed and something does go on in here that make people leave this room and ask for another room within the hotel.
Jim says that she can’t leave the room as the doors are all locked. He felt that she is waiting for someone and he wanted to go to the window again. Just as he was speaking, something touches the back of Pauline and Denise’s legs. He has a feeling that the door was locked maybe for her own good and that this spirit has been seen over the years by many people.
Jim continued by saying that this lady disapproves of the things that go on here in this room – the staff confirm again that for a number of reasons people have requested to leave this room. He then feels a draught across the room, near where the wardrobe is. Again there was noises heard, but it could be some other team members in another room.
The group decided to do a séance and Jim begins by calling out for the spirits to come forward. After a short time Emma starts moving forward. Jim picks up again on the female spirit, he feels very sad for her as she seems so lonely. The name Polly was said, but unable to confirm if this was the spirit's name.
Jim believes that she was not a worker in the house, he then started to talk in an Irish accent – this does happens now and then and he feels it could well be one of his guides.
Jane calls out to the female spirit to try and get her to come forward, there was a feeling that she did want to cross over, but she just waits and waits for him. Jim confirms that she is afraid and has a feeling that she was ill. He also calls out saying “The bed is not right”. There was something not right with the room and again he is drawn to the corner and he does not like the feeling he was picking up on.
Jane uses the Dowsing Rods to try and communicate with the female spirit and asks “Are you happy here?” The rods move away from each other indicating “No”.
“Would you like us to help you cross over?” The rods cross indicating “Yes”
Jane asks if any of the staff would like to have a go at using the rods, but none are keen. Jane then notices that Jim has gone into a trance and begins to talk with him.
Question: “Who are you?” Answer: “Leave her be”.
Question: “Who are you?” There was no answer and Jim returned from his trance.
He asked the staff present about a secret room, which may well not be a secret anymore – they knew nothing of this. However, at the end of the night having spoken to another member of staff they were able to confirm that there were in fact two secret rooms and passage.
1st Floor – Bedroom No 26.
This room was slightly smaller than the previous one. There was a different feeling in this room and after a while some of the team were picking up on cold draughts around their legs. There didn’t appear to be any explanation for this as the windows and doors were closed and no one was moving.
Jim asked the staff if they knew of any royal connection to the hotel. It would have been when it was a house and not as it was now, but none of them knew of any connection. It was later found that some of the bedrooms were named after Queen’s, whether this was the connection he was having or indeed if any Royal had visited this place.
He then began to pick up on a male spirit. He felt this gentleman was an officer going by the way he was dressed and he was able to get the name of Ryan. Jim says that he likes Claire and asked the gentleman to make himself known to her. Jane then decides to use the Dowsing Rods to communicate.
Question: “Are you a officer?” Jim is able to reply “Officer and a gentleman”
Question: “Are you British?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Are you American?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Is your name Ryan?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you grounded here?” Answer: “No”
Question: “So you just come and go?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you have happy memories here?” Answer: “Yes”
Jane asks for Ryan to make a noise. After a while a few people hear a noise which sounded like a scrapping noise or someone walking on gravel. The team were unable to find a cause for the noise and thought maybe it was Ryan making it.
Question: “Would you talk through Jim if we were to hold a séance?” Answer: “Yes”
The team then form a circle to start the séance in the hope of contacting Ryan again. He did come through again and was able to talk with Jim. Jane asks “Did you use to come here and stay at the hotel?” He replied “No”
“Where you an officer in the Army or Air Force?” Jim confirmed he was in the Army. He can also see a packet of nylons in his hands. Jim was also been told about a Brigadier. Jane asks “Was he killed in the war” Jim was unsure on this. He believes he died after D-Day and he didn’t die fighting which he would have like to have done – if you can understand that. Jim feels that he wasn’t happy for some reason. He was a Lieutenant who drove the Brigadier around. He really wanted to be fighting with his mates. He would have gone to meetings and even talked about Churchill. He really liked it here and had been to this place several times.
Jim says he is getting a great deal of pain around his waist. He feels that Ryan is explaining to him how he died – he was either shot or something far worst, perhaps being blown up. Ryan tells Jim that the group might meet his friend later; a bit of a rogue. He is showing Jim someone standing by a piano and they are singing.
Jim is also picking up on a lady that walks around here. She has a long cocktail dress on and looks very posh. Although he could not see it, he felt she would have a long cigarette holder with her. Jim then asked “Who died in or around the lake?” and then asked “Is there a lake?” The staff didn’t know of a lake. He confirmed if they didn’t die in the lake, then it was nearby.
The team had a few minutes left and decide to return to the previous room. It was at this point that a strange sound was caught on the recorder (EVP 1). They only stayed a few minutes in Room 44 and nothing further occurred. This EVP can be found a little further down.
2nd Floor – Bedroom No 27
The temperature when entering this room was recorded at 25.7c.
As they began the vigil noises could be heard, but they could not determine where they were coming from and ascertained that it could be the other team who were on the floor below.
Jim says that he can feel something and begins to call out. He adds that he can see someone standing in the room. Jane asks if it is a male or female, but Jim could not tell. He asks the spirit to push someone, but nothing occurs. Jim taps the floor and asks the spirits to repeat the sound. Taps are then heard by the other team members. He asks for it to be repeated and the tapping is heard again, but unfortunately the noises were not loud enough to be picked up on the recorder.
This room proved to be very quiet with very little activity and the team decided to move on to the next room.
2nd Floor – Bedroom No 9
The room temperature was recorded at 21.8c.
When the team entered the room Jim goes up to an area that he feels should be a writing desk where blotting paper and other writing instruments should be. He continues by saying “That there is a lady present who tells me she wrote letters here.” This lady is not so much as upset, but anxious. Jim then asks the staff present if the building had been altered. He was told that this part had been added and the two rooms would have been one, which is why Jim feels that he want to walk through the wall.
Jim is being told about a jezebel and that they would understand. Jane asks “Do you mean a whore” and Jim said that it seemed right. The team then decided to start a séance and form a circle accordingly. Jane calls out and Jim starts to channel and she notices that he had gone shy and feels that they are now in the presence of a female spirit and asks her to come forward and speak to them.
Question: “What is your name?” Spirit answers via Jim and says “Kate, Katie”
Question: “Why are you here?” Answer: “Live here”
Question: “Can you tell us what year it is?” A date was said, but could not be picked up.
Question: “Why are you still here?”
Question: “Were you happy here?”
Jim then asks one of the staff if they “humm” when they work, because he felt that Kate would follow her as she liked it. She says that they are all so happy whilst they work.
One of the staff said they did make up little rhymes and things sometimes. Jim then said “And the little one said roll over, roll over” He was unsure as to why he had been told this. He continues by saying that Kate has informed him that one of the staff got told off and had to stand up for themselves. She likes the staff and is very happy here.
The spirit then tells Jim about a teddy bear, an old one that someone has. There is something different about the paws, maybe one is odd. She says that one of them in the room knows what he is talking about, but all of the people present reply “No”. He also adds that there is something that has been left for at least 200 years and asks “Why he is being told about secret rooms and a passage”. Nothing was known by the staff present, but this was confirmed later by another member of the staff.
Jim asks Kate “If her shoulder is OK?” She replied “Yes”, but Jim says he can see what looks like a hand on her shoulder. He adds there are spirits here all from different times. The lady he picked up on was dating back to the late 1800, she is the one that would walk in front of the windows and though into the next room, of course the layout of the room was very different then.
Jane asked if people would see this lady and Jim believed they would as she is very active. Jane feels she is moving and also feels a little sick and she keeps thinking the bed is moving. Emma says she feels like someone has their arm around her back. Jim picks up on a girl in a long night dress, she looks very ill, her eyes are dark and she is very thin, almost anorexic. She looks very sad and very weak. A noise is then heard by the team, however it was not repeated.
The team then return to the other room, but there was no activity apart from Jane and some other members of the team seeing a light go across Jim’s head.

Team 2
2nd Floor – Bedroom No 7
Mac began the vigil by calling out for any spirits to come forward. After a while they start to pick up on a male spirit, a knocking noise is then heard which make the team jump. Carol then sees someone and asks them to come forward. It is a man who is dressed very smart in uniform.
The team hear the TV click, but are unsure if it caused by the spirit and ask for it to be repeated. Carol declares that the man has now gone, however she is picking up on someone smaller, maybe a child. They again hear a clicking noise near the TV. Carol confirms that she is a little girl and that she lived at the hotel with her brother, she gets the names James, Sarah or Jane.
Mac verifies that they have two spirits in the room, the little girl and a man. Carol calls them forward and the name Justin come to her. Mac asks Carol if the man worked here. She replies that he did, but not whilst it was a hotel and the little girl is holding the man’s arm. Carol asks the team to look towards the bathroom where he is standing in the doorway, but none of the team can see him. Mac makes a knocking sound and asks for it to be repeated. Carol says the little girl is laughing, she thinks it is very funny.
2nd Floor – Bedroom No 9
When they start the vigil Mac suggest they begin by using the Dowsing Rods. She calls out for any spirit to cross the rods to let them know they are there. The rods cross indicating “Yes”
Question: “Are you a man?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you work here?” Answer: “Yes”
Carol says there is someone standing by one of the members of staff. She believes that the male maybe connected to this member of staff and he is with her most of the time. The staff member asks the spirit “Are you the person I think you are?” There is no response.
“Can you give your name to Carol please?” Still nothing happens
Question: “Are you standing behind me?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Can you give us a name?” No response given
Question: “Are you my granddad?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Do you have a connection to the house?” Answer: “No”
Carol also agrees with this answer and tells the member of staff “That he stays with you a lot”. She then gets the name Jack. The rods cross indication “Yes” after asking if the name was correct.
Carol then asks “Has Jane followed us here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Do you think we are funny?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Jane, will you show yourself to someone in the group tonight?” There was no response from the rods.
Question: “Are you aged between 5 and 10 years?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Are you 8 years old?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Have you got dark hair?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Will you talk to Carol?” Answer: “Yes”
Carol says that there are not a lot of children at the hotel. Noises are heard again, but the team cannot determine where they are coming from. Carol tries to get Jane to touch one of the team. She also believes that the lady she keeps picking up on maybe the child’s mother.
The team then return to the previous bedroom on this floor. As they enter they all have a strange feeling that was not apparent the first time round. The team split up to investigate further. Carol feels that the little girl Jane has also followed them. Altogether she believes they have 3 spirits in the room with them – Jane, the lady that could be her mother and the man that she feels worked here. Mac asks the team to form a circle to start a séance.
Carol feels a nasty pain in her head that she thinks the lady had gone through. As Mac calls out many of the team feel very cold around their legs. Carol talks to Jane and asks her to touch someone, but informs the group that she is just laughing. Zoe says she feels someone is behind her. They pick up on the lady and ask her “Are you Jane’s mother?” The answer comes back as “No”
“Who are you?” Carol tells them that she now looks after her now, but not when she was living. A strong smell of perfume is smelt by the team.
1st Floor – Bedroom No 44
The room temperature when the team recorded was at 25c.
They begin the vigil by using the dowsing rods to communicate with any spirits present.
Question: “Is there anybody in this room?” Answer: “Yes” and then the rods pointed to a direction in the room.
Question: “Are you a male?” No answer given
Question: “Are you a female?” No answer given
Question: “Again we ask are you a female?”
Question: “Are you a male?” After a while the rods crossed to “Yes”
Question: “Are there more than 2 spirits in this room?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you use to work here?” Answer: “Yes”
Jane appears to have followed them to this room and is staying right by Carol. The team hear noises within the room, but cannot find the cause. Some team members can hear movement behind them. The temperature is recorded and they notice it has gone up to 27c, but this could be due to body temperature of the people in the room.
Carol informs the group that she can see two spirits standing either side of one of the team members. Another noise is heard, Mac tries to recreate it, but unable to do so. The team feel more activity developing within the room and a clicking noise is also heard, but unfortunately not caught on the digital recorder. Mac feels the atmosphere becoming stronger and Carol believes it is contributed to a presence of a man who has something wrong with his arm. He looks like a gamekeeper and has a dog with him. She gets the name Archie or Austin. Mac confirms that she can hear dogs barking. Carol says “It’s not outside, it is in here”
Question: “Is that your dogs we can hear?”
Question: “Did you work here?”
Carol informs the group that there is an older man here that died suddenly and she pointed to chest area. He is saying something about water and the team are told there are two lakes out back. He was in a lot of pain and he is related to the gamekeeper. Two knocks are then heard on the hearing device.

Question: “Can you give us a name?” No response given

Question: “Do you have a connection to the house?” Answer: “No”
Carol also agrees with this answer and tells the member of staff “That he stays with you a lot”. She then gets the name Jack. The rods cross indication “Yes” after asking if the name was correct.
Carol then asks “Has Jane followed us here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Do you think we are funny?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Jane, will you show yourself to someone in the group tonight?” There was no response from the rods.

Cocktail bar
Both teams joined up for this vigil.
It wasn’t long before Jim picked up on a man who liked a drink and he felt more than a little merry. Jane calls out to Jim for a name to this man and Jim stretches out on one of the chairs. They call out for a name and after a while a voice comes through.
“Some call me Tom, some call me Thomas”. Mac asked what he liked to be called, but received no answer.
Question: “Did you work here?” Answer: “No”
Question: “What age are you?” No answer was given
Jim said he was very much a Jack The Lad type of guy. He comes across as someone who walks around the bar and really likes his drink. The name of Jason and Charles were said. Jason (the night person) was able to confirm that many have seen a gentleman sitting like Jim was and was known to have liked the woman and his drink.
Jim sees someone at the bottom of the stairs who is looking into the room. He is picking up on a man who would walk around and be leaning forward – he was not as tall as Jim (6ft). Noises were heard and it sounded like someone was sitting around talking. The area was checked and there was no one around, but sound could and may have travelled.
The group go the lining cupboard where Carol and Jim pick up on an old lady at the rear of the room, they felt that she would have worked there and was seen by many. Jim also felt that things would come off the shelves.

Conclusion
It was confirmed that Bedroom 44 was reported to have a young girl who stayed in there. She would keep looking out for her father from the window. She had been very ill and died in that room. Both teams picked up on something in this room – Jim was spot on and Carol also picked up on this girl. Both mediums picked up on a man dressed in uniform and the female spirits.
The night was very quiet and the teams had very little results. The two mediums picked on many things and the staff were able to confirm most of what was reported, but there was no evidence for the others to see for themselves.
SouthWest London Paranormal had a good time despite not be able to obtain much activity or evidence and would like to thank the hosts for their help and hospitality.
