Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker - Brentwood, Essex
Investigation Date: 10 July 2010
The location has witness the three lives of the bunker - starting with its role as an RAF ROTOR Station, then a brief period as a civil defence centre through to its most recent life as a Regional Government HQ. Designed for up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the Prime Minister, their collective task being to organise the survival of the population in the awful aftermath of a nuclear war.
There were also spare bunk beds in the tunnel, to help accommodate some of the hundreds of civilian and military personnel that would be stationed here in time of nuclear attack. The bunker was built on land requisitioned from the local farmer J.A.Parrish.
Paradoxically as the heat of the Cold War died down, the bunker and it's ancillary systems were no longer required by the Government, and were costing up to 3 million pounds a year to keep on standby. Upon decommissioning in 1992 the bunker was bought back from the government by the Parrish family, at a closed bid public auction, and hence is now privately owned.

It was after this outing that we started the South West London Paranormal Group, but have included the report to the website as most of the members of our group were at this location.
We arrived at the bunker around 8.00 pm, most of us having not been here before. Upon arrival we met our gracious host Mile in the canteen. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all his help and time.
We had a good look round with Mike and listened to a recording as we went round telling us about this strange place.
After a welcome break, and the fact there were 17 of us, we decided to split into two team’s one lead by Jim, the other led by Emma.
We covered 3 areas:
* Entrance Hall and Top Floor
* Middle Floor
* Bottom Floor
Due to the fact it is such a large area, we were unable to cover all the rooms and parts of the areas. This was often due to one of the teams picking up on something and staying a little longer.
Jim took his team to the bottom floor and Emma started at the top, as it was decided to do the middle floor as a larger group.
We arrived at the bunker around 8.00 pm, most of us having not been here before. Upon arrival we met our gracious host Mile in the canteen. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all his help and time.
We had a good look round with Mike and listened to a recording as we went round telling us about this strange place.

Jim took his team to the bottom floor and Emma started at the top, as it was decided to do the middle floor as a larger group.
TEAM 1
Emma's team started with the male Dorm where they found a temperature change from 20.3 down to 19.4, as with the washroom changing from 19 up to 20.2 then down again to 18. There seemed no reason for the change.
In the Surgery, they used the Ouija board during which we heard a knock, but no further activity. They then moved in to the side room and formed a circle. Mandy felt a draught, then Bob felt it across his shoulders. Wendy said she had tingling in her hands. The draught spread around the circle, this made Mandy get even colder, and Wendy’s heart started pounding, Emma also said she had a pain in her chest.
(Note: being so far down in the ground, there are no windows or doors open to cause a draught)
Downstairs
The Long Corridor, ¾ of the way down they held hands in a circle, the temperature dropped and the entire group saw a white light in the shape of a tall man behind Helen, her legs also become very cold.
Wendy was feeling very apprehensive along with Emma. Wendy became uncomfortable she felt threatened and left the group. Mandy said she saw a mist coming from the end of the tunnel.
TEAM 2
Bottom floor - Long Tunnel
Team 2 lead by Jim, started at the tunnel, there was a feeling felt by all the team; the feeling that someone else was there. They were sure if this was down to echo’s, but it was a little strange, because it did not echo all the time?
They checked the EMF meter, at one point it went up to 4, despite several checks they were not able to find a reason for this, so decided to do the Ouija board here, and checked the temperature which went down by just over 3 degrees.
Jim called out and after a time they was movement from the Ouija board.
He asked "are you male or female?" Answer - "female"
Question "Did you work here?" Answer - "not sure"
The cup, on the ouija board moved to a number of letters I,G,H,J - this made no sense!
Jim called out again to the spirits, and the cup moved to a number of random letters O,R,P,K,V,G - again this made no sense.
He asked, "are you the lady spirit still?" Answer - "Yes"
Question "Can you tell us your name" the cup moved to M,O,T,M,T - again this made no sense.
The cup then moved to Hello, and the temperature dropped 2 degrees. The cup started moving towards Stuart, this happened a couple of times.
Question: "Are you trying to talk to Stuart?" Answer - "Yes"
Question: "Are you related to Stuart?" Answer - "Yes"
Question: "Can you give us the letter of your first name?" Answer - "E or F"
As we were not getting any sense from the board, and the time was passing by quickly, we decided to move on.
It was then decided to split up into 3 smaller teams as follows:
* Daemon and Alison went off into the Map Room
* Jane, Dawn and Stuart went to the small Office next door
* Jim, Tony, Dawn and Jane went into what was believed to be some sort of boiler room
Alison and Daemon saw a number of lights outside the Map room, which we later found to be the flash of someone's camera. However, there were two big flashes of light actually seen inside the Map room. Jim had earlier thought he had seen a shadow move within this room.
Jim, Tony, Dawn and Jane heard a door slam, but nothing more from their vigil.
Top Floor
We went into the surgery to conduct a Ouija board and began to call out.
Question: "Is there any spirit person here?" Answer - "Yes"
Question: "Are you male or female?" Answer - "female"
Question: "Are you connected to the bunker?" Answer - "no"
Jim then had the name Roslyn come through to him.
Question: "Is your name Roslyn?" Answer - "no"
Question: " Do you know a Roslyn?" Answer - "no"
Question: "Can you tell us the initial of your first name?" Answer - "W"
Question: "Do you want to talk to someone here?" Answer - "yes" and the cup then moved again to Stuart
Question: "Are you the same lady as downstairs?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Can you give us the letter of your surname?" Answer - "W"
Question: "Were you alive whist Stuart has been born?" Answer - "I, U, A"
Question: "Is Stuart the one you want to talk to?" Answer - "H"
Question: "Can you tell us what year you were born?" Answer - "69"
Question: "Born in 1969?" Answer - "no"
Question: "Can you tell us what year you passed over?" Answer - "32"
Question: "Are you related to Stuart?" Answer - nothing
Question: "Why are you at the bunker?" Answer - "Z"
We stopped for a moment and when we restarted, the cup moved straight to the number 9, without been asked.
Question: "Are you a different spirit?" Answer - "9"
Question: "Are you the same spirit?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Is there 9 words in the message?" Answer - "no"
As we were getting nowhere and finding difficult and frustrating to understand the lady's message, Jim asked her to step aside to let anyone else through.
Despite several attempts to contact any other spirits that maybe around, it appeared unfruitful and once again the original lady appeared to return for further communication with the group via the ouiija board, and the glass again moved towards Stuart.
Stuart said "he could not take any of the letters she had said" and Jim replied that he was beginning to pick up a little bit more regarding the lady.
Question: "Does Stuart look like someone you knew?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Were you 32 when you past over?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Did you wear overalls?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Did you work in the canteen?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Were you a cook?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "When did you pass over?" Answer - "don't know"
Question: "Do you know how to spell your name?" No answer received, but Jim asked "Is there another spirit with them?", as he felt the presence of someone else in the room.
Question: "Is there another spirit with you?" Answer - "yes"
Jim asked "if they were behind him?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Are we in any danger?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Is this a male spirit?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Male spirit - do you want us to leave?" Answer - "no"
Question: "Why are we in danger?" No Answer
Question: "Did you work here?" Answer - "yes"
Question: "Were you killed here?" Answer - "no"
Question: "Can you touch someone here?"
We stood for a short time, when Jane said that she felt like someone had touched her shoulder. No further activities took place, so it was decided to move on.
Middle Floor
On this floor, it was decided that the two teams would stay together and form one group. As we began to look around the Communication room, some people began to have "funny feelings" about the place. Some felt, they we were being watched from one of the doorways.
Jim then asked everyone to form a circle and to start a séance. He then asked how everyone was feeling. Some of the group said that they were feeling really cold around their legs. He then asked Emma and Scarlet, if they were alright. The reason for this question to them, was because he thought someone was leaning between both of them. After a short while, Emma began to feel sick and was coming over all funny. Jim decided to move into the circle and help Emma. She felt very hot and Jim asked that any spirits around her to leave. After a short time Emma felt better.
One of the other girls also said that she was beginning to feel funny, and she felt like someone was standing behind her. Jim then went over to her, and once again asked that the spirit to back away.
The group then decided to move on, they went into a couple of other rooms near by, but no activities or sounds were apparent.
For the remaining hour, Jim asked the team where they would like to return to. It was decided to go back to the tunnel.
Scarlet was not so keen to return there, due to how she had felt earlier. However, all the team made their way down the many steps to the long tunnel.
Upon arrival the team held a séance and Jim called out several times for the presence of spirits to enter the area. Footsteps and some noises could be heard. After 1/2 hour or so it was decided to call it a night.
Throughout the night, a number of different noises were heard. There were footsteps also heard, doors banging and what sounded like furniture being moved. The sound of people talking (other then the group) could be heard. It must be said, that it was only our group in the bunker that night, and when noises were heard, checks were made to distinguish if other people were around. Further to these checks no other reasons could be found for these unexplained noises.
There was one other strange thing which could not be easily explained. There was a piece of dark paper on some sort of cupboard which we had all passed a number of times to go to the toilet. No one noticed that the name Emma had been written on this piece of paper. It was not till later that this was picked up. The question is - was the name written on there before we had arrived, or was it written after our arrival? None of the group had done this.
The photo's below that were taken during the night's investigation contain allegedly Orb's. However, one photo taken had two stange lights which could not be explained.
This is not the most paranormal place that we have been to. There was some activity that could not be explained. It is possible that we will return again at a later date.
Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker is an outstanding place, not only for the paranormal side of things, but for all the interesting items contained within it. The history of the place is remarkable and it is a place well worth seeing.
