The Royal Hippodrome Theatre - Eastbourne, East Sussex (The Return)

The Royal Hippodrome opened in 1883 as the New Theatre Royal and Opera House. It changed to the Royal Hippodrome in 1904 following refurbishments. Reputted to have many Spirits still active with the theatre and well known for paranormal activity.
There will be at least one Medium attending and we will be carrying out our routine investigation procedures.
We had a fantastic night on our last visit in December 2010, and now the long awaited return, we have also been told that we maybe the last group to visit the theatre before it closes and goes under new ownership.

Below are some of the many photos we took on the night, there are more to come. Make up your own minds over the Orbs that have been caught. I believe that most are just dust, but are all these just dust, take a close look at some of them. There is also one that shows a strange beem of light.

The team was greeted by Jeff who would be our host for the night. South West London Paranormal would like to say a very big thank you for all his help during the night. Jeff was also able to confirm many of the things that were picked up on throughout the night.
We had heard that our investigation may well be the last at The Royal Hippodrome, but it may not be the case, as it appears the council are trying to take on this wonderful theatre. If you get the chance you must try and visit this place as it is full of history.
Team 1 – Top Floor
The temperature in this area was recorded at 18c.
The team started in the rehearsal room. Jim told the group that there was a young ballerina dancing in front of him. She seemed happy and carried on dancing, whilst Helen and some of the other member’s investigated, one of the rooms which lead off the main room and the other member went into the main room.
In the main room they all took turns to call out. They hear noises, but unfortunately they were not picked up on the digital recorder. There was also a ticking sound heard, but there was no clock in the room. Charlotte who was wearing the hearing enhancers could hear a lady singing.
Helen and the others rejoin the team and sit at the end of the room. She is getting a grumpy old man who is far from happy. It was decided to try the dowsing rods. Jim calls out for any spirits present to cross the rods and after a short while the rods did cross. He then asks the spirit to use the rods and point towards where they are standing. The rods points towards Zoe.
Question: “Are you behind Zoe?” The rods did not move
Question: “Are you a male?” Answer: “Yes”
(More questions were asked, but unfortunately when playing the recorder back the sound could not be heard clearly)
The team then move on to the Ouija board. Jim calls out to the spirits to move the glass and before long the glass did begin to move.
Question: “Thank you. Are you a male?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you the man Helen picked up earlier?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you happy we are here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you happy here?” Answer: “Yes”
The glass then moves and spells “A, T”
Question: “Can you tell us your name?” Answer: “M”
Question: “What’s next please?”
One of the team gets the name of Michael, but there was no response.
Question: “Did you take part in what happened in this room years ago?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Why have you not moved on, are you happy?” Answer: “Yes”
One of the team feels that he is safe here.
Nikki asks “Can you tell us what happened in this room?” Answer: “S”
Question: “What is the next letter?” Answer: “U”
Question: “What is the 3rd letter please?” There was no further movement from the glass.
Question: “Again what happened in this room?” Answer: “R, A”
Question: “Did you take part in this Sir?”
Jim tells the team that girls had been held against their will here. They had been promised that they would get on stage in exchange for sex.
Question: “Have you been brought up by a strict religious background?”
Question: “This is why you are scared to cross over?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “You were not the only one involved?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Can you tell us how many times this happened?” No answer
Question: “The young lady I was picking up on – was she one of the victims?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “How many spirits are in here now?” Answer: “3”
Question: “Can you give me the first two letters of the lady I saw?” Answer: “D, A”
Jim said that she was dancing.
The team decided to walk around the area, but found very little activity. There was a feeling of being watched, however it could be down to the place being dark and what they were doing. They moved to the projector room, but once again there was no activity. As they were leaving the room Helen saw an old man sitting down next to some of the lighting equipment. It was later discovered that Team 2 had also seen him and Carol picked up on him when they returned.
The team started to head back to the meeting area, however Jim lead them the wrong way, down several flights of stairs to find that the door they came across was locked. As they turned back Nikki shouted “Did you see him.” She saw a young boy who was hiding around the corner who then followed the team for a while. Jim believed he was the young spirit he had picked up on before, as did another team member. Later on Jeff confirmed some information regarding this young boy.
Team 1 – Middle Floor
Jim joined Helen in the left hand box as she feels a presence near to her and also below on the stage. She feels it is a male in the box looking down towards the stage and he has dark hair. They take it in turns to call out. A few of the team hear noises and Jim feels that there is someone in the pit.
Helen sees someone and hears clicking which was not any member of the team. She feels there is someone on the stage and then sees a man dressed in a black suit over to the right hand side of the stage. Nikki calls out and a flashing light is seen. As Jim walks up the long passageway he moves around someone standing there without thinking. He felt that this would be someone wanting to show you around.
The team begin a séance and Jim calls out. Some of the group hear footsteps behind Jim and shadows are seen moving around the team. Jim goes into a trance and is spoken to by the team.
Question: “Are you OK?” Jim replies showing pain.
Question: “Can you talk to us?”
Question: “Where does it hurt?” Answer: “My head it hurts”
Question: “Were you in an accident?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Were you in a fight?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Did someone hit you on the head?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “What is your name?” Answer: “Fredrick Humphries”
Question: “How old are you?” Answer: “64”
Question: “Are you here alone?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Can you tell us what happened?” Answer: “I can’t remember anything”
Question: “What year did this happen?” Answer: “09, 2009”
Fredrick then leaves.
Helen say that he was a tall man, which Jim agrees – tall and lonely. He had never felt that before, he seemed to be so much taller. He even checked to see if he had gone on to his tiptoes, as it appeared he was looking down at everybody, but he had not. Jim comes over feeling funny and needs to sit down; they ask if it is Fredrick, but Jim says “No, someone else is there”
He returns back into a trance and Fredrick comes back, he is a little stronger and appears to be a gentleman.
Question: “Did you have many friends?” Answer: “I suppose so”
(Parts of the remaining conversation are not clear on the recorder)
Jim then gets someone else coming through.
Question: “Can you tell us your name?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Why” There was no answer and Jim returns from his trance.
Jim explains to the team that he was unsure who this spirit was, he didn’t feel nasty, just very annoyed. The spirit was from a different time period then Fredrick.
Team 1 – Manager’s Office
Jim was initially drawn to this are and becomes very agitated when Jeff has a problem finding the key. Helen gets a funny feeling again and went very cold. As the team entered the office Jim says “This is not right” and is drawn to a pair of scissors which are on the desk.
The team notice that Jim is moving around the table without taking his eyes of the scissors, so they move them. Jim then turns and tries to open the window and is pulled back by the team. He felt someone died here, either killed themselves or something it was hard to explain, but when he saw the scissors there was an urge to cut himself, then for some reason wanted to go out the window.

Footsteps are then heard and Emma has the feeling of someone touching her. They call out again

Question: “Are you aged between 8 and 10?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you here with your mummy and daddy?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Is it the lady that Carol saw?” Answer: “Yes”
Carol says she is wearing a beautiful blue velvet dress. The team decided to move to another part of the area and Lyn starts a séance.
As they begin Carol sees someone standing over near the door and calls for them to come forward. A noise is heard by the team as Carol continues to encourage the spirit person to come forward. The team comment on how hot it is becoming and then returns back to being cold. Tina feels like there is someone in front of her. The team hear little footsteps of the children and ask them to come into the circle and tickle them again.
The spirit child Paulette tells Carol she is sad and it is not as beautiful as it was. They continue to call out, but nothing further comes through and they decide to use the dowsing rods again. Lyn calls out to the children and asks the little boy “Is your name Kevin?” Answer: “No”.
One of the team gets the name Steven and asks “Is your name Steven?” Answer: “Yes”
They ask “How old are you?” and count the numbers and when they reached the number 13 the rods crossed indicating “Yes”
Jane asks “Is it you who are putting the seats down?” Answer: “No”
Another child appears who is rushing around and seems much stronger than the others. They get the age of 13 again. The team can feel the children all around them and Lyn can feel someone touching her and it feels very strong.
Question: “Is your dad here?” Answer: “Yes”
Lyn calls out to the dad and asks him to cross the rods and they do indeed cross.
Question: “Are you happy here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you work here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Were you a performer?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Dad, are you called Anthony?” No answer received.
Team 2 – Top Floor
As they approach this are a man is seen sitting in one of the seats just below the lighting room. From here they move to the rehearsal room and decide to begin the vigil by using the dowsing rods.
Question: “If there is anyone with us, please could you cross the rods” After a few seconds the rods cross.
Question: “Are you a male?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you work here” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you happy here” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you OK with us here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Can you make a noise for us?” The team hear something, but unfortunately it is not picked up on the recorder.
Question: “Can you point to where you are?” Answer: “Yes”
The rods point towards Tina, who is actually holding the rods.
Question: “Are you next to Tina?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “You didn’t die here did you?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Can you tell us your name please?” Carol informs the group that he is not very happy, he didn’t die here, he is however very young and calm.
Question: “Are you in your 20’s?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you 25?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you die of an illness?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Was it an accident?” Answer: “Yes”
Lyn asks him if he could talk to Carol again.
Carol asks him “Was it to do with a traffic injury?” It feels as though it has something to do with his head.
Question: “Did you fall?” The rods do not move
Carol relays that there is too much noise for him. Jane confirms it is noisy with the clubs outside.
Question: “Would you like to join your loved ones?” Carol says “He is very tired” and continues “That he hurt one side of his head when he fell.”
Jane asks “Was it a fight?” Answer: “Yes” Carol confirms that he shouldn’t have been there; he hurt his eye in this fight.
Question: “Are you a local?”
Question: “Can you tell us your name?”
Question: “Did you say James?” And the rods cross to “Yes”
Carol feels his pain and they ask James “Would you like us to come back and cross you over?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you alone here?” Answer: “No” Carol says that he sits alone.
Question: “Can you tell us how long you have been here?” Carol gets February.
Question: “What year?” The team then hear a bang
Question: “Was it in the 20th century?” Answer: “Yes”
Jane feels very cold and they check the room temperature around her and it registers at 20c. Carol asks “Are you walking around us James?” Answer: “Yes”
The team decide to start a séance and ask James to come through, but nothing occurs. They ask for any other spirits to come forward. “James do you see the children in the room?” The team appear to receive no further communication with James and decide to leave the room. It is very quiet and they walk around seeing what they can pick up.
Jane picks up to dowsing rods again and calls out, before long the rods cross.
Question: “Are you a male?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “James is that you back with us?” Answer: “Yes”
Jane says that she can feel how weak he is.
Question: “James is there anyone else here with us?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Can you point the rods to where you are standing?” The rods point towards Carol and she say that he is standing behind her.
Question: “James, do you speak to the children?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are the children not allowed up here to play?” Answer: “No”
During one of the breaks Jeff confirmed some of the things that they had picked up on as both teams had now covered the two areas.
He told of the child that Nikki had picked up on in the passage way that led down to the exit. Jim had described the child and Jeff confirmed that he had heard there was a young boy who would creep in with the adults and make his way upstairs, he had been seen many times before.
Jeff also relayed that he had heard footsteps of a child running behind him. Jim asked “Did this child die here?” He said that he had been told that the child had an illness. Jim asked “Was this breathing problems?” And Jeff confirmed that it was. He also told the team that he had seen shadows in the boxes as well.

The rods point towards Tina, who is actually holding the rods.

Question: “You didn’t die here did you?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Can you tell us your name please?” Carol informs the group that he is not very happy, he didn’t die here, he is however very young and calm.
Question: “Are you in your 20’s?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you 25?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you die of an illness?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Was it an accident?” Answer: “Yes”
Lyn asks him if he could talk to Carol again.
Carol asks him “Was it to do with a traffic injury?” It feels as though it has something to do with his head.
Question: “Did you fall?” The rods do not move
Carol relays that there is too much noise for him. Jane confirms it is noisy with the clubs outside.
Question: “Would you like to join your loved ones?” Carol says “He is very tired” and continues “That he hurt one side of his head when he fell.”
Jane asks “Was it a fight?” Answer: “Yes” Carol confirms that he shouldn’t have been there; he hurt his eye in this fight.
Question: “Are you a local?”
Question: “Can you tell us your name?”
Question: “Did you say James?” And the rods cross to “Yes”
Carol feels his pain and they ask James “Would you like us to come back and cross you over?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you alone here?” Answer: “No” Carol says that he sits alone.
Question: “Can you tell us how long you have been here?” Carol gets February.
Question: “What year?” The team then hear a bang
Question: “Was it in the 20th century?” Answer: “Yes”
Jane feels very cold and they check the room temperature around her and it registers at 20c. Carol asks “Are you walking around us James?” Answer: “Yes”
The team decide to start a séance and ask James to come through, but nothing occurs. They ask for any other spirits to come forward. “James do you see the children in the room?” The team appear to receive no further communication with James and decide to leave the room. It is very quiet and they walk around seeing what they can pick up.
Jane picks up to dowsing rods again and calls out, before long the rods cross.
Question: “Are you a male?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “James is that you back with us?” Answer: “Yes”
Jane says that she can feel how weak he is.
Question: “James is there anyone else here with us?” Answer: “Yes”

During one of the breaks Jeff confirmed some of the things that they had picked up on as both teams had now covered the two areas.
He told of the child that Nikki had picked up on in the passage way that led down to the exit. Jim had described the child and Jeff confirmed that he had heard there was a young boy who would creep in with the adults and make his way upstairs, he had been seen many times before.
Jeff also relayed that he had heard footsteps of a child running behind him. Jim asked “Did this child die here?” He said that he had been told that the child had an illness. Jim asked “Was this breathing problems?” And Jeff confirmed that it was. He also told the team that he had seen shadows in the boxes as well.
Team 1 & Team 2 – Middle Floor
For the last part of the investigation both team worked together and began with the return to the Rehearsal Room as team 2 wanted Jim to help the spirit of James to cross over.
Once in the room the teams formed a circle and began a séance. They called for James to come forward, it did take quite a while for him to respond and Carol said he was present with them and he was scared, but willing to cross over. Jane calls out to him with Carol relaying that he was in a lot of pain and very weak. After sometime they were able to get James into the circle and to cross him over. Hopefully this poor sole will now rest in peace.
Manager’s Office
With both teams together Jim stood back. As soon as the door opened he began looking for the scissors again. Nothing happened in this room, but Jeff did tell the team that he had heard of a manager who used this office had died from cuts. He was unsure if he had killed himself, but understood he had received some sort of infection from the cuts.
The Rope Room
There was a strange feeling when the teams entered into this room, one of the members thought someone had brushed her face. Jim calls out and there were sounds, but these noises could have been a number of things. It was decided to try the dowsing rods.
Helen calls out whilst holding the rods and they crossed indicating “Yes”

Carol asks “Is it a boy rather than an adult?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you Kite?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Did you help out here?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Did you sneak in here?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Did you come here to work with your daddy?” Answer: “Yes”

Question: “Are you scared?”
Are sometime of calling out the group was receiving no further response and decide to leave.
Stage Area
The group started with the Ouija board in the middle of the stage. Jim calls out to the many spirits that were within the theatre. A short time later the glass moves.
Question: “Are you a male?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Are you a female?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you perform on this stage?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Did you want to sing or dance here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Can you tell us the year that you were here?” Answer: “13”
Question: “Are you saying that it was 1913?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Can you give us the first letter of your first name?” Answer: “G”
Question: “Can you give us the second letter of your first name?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Did you work here as a cleaner?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Did you use to come here and watch the show?” Answer: “No”

Jim started clapping and telling a couple of jokes, whilst Jane began singing on the stage area in order to try and coax some activities from the spirit people. Jane and some others attempted to do some dancing (well that’s what they said it was) and even Jim tried out tap dancing to no avail. All was very quiet and nothing was heard only the feeling of someone watching from the top floor.
Jim whistled and the team thought they could hear whistling back. He repeated this several time, but nothing further was heard. Jim could then hear what sounded like The Sound of Music in his head. Jeff replied that was the show that was on at the time and was using one of the songs from the film.
Helen suggests that Charlotte and her sit in the audience. Jane and other members of the group felt there were shadows moving about, this could well be true or it could well be just their eyes playing tricks.
