Chertsey Museum - Chertsey, Surrey
Investigation Date: 9 October 2010
This was our first solo investigation as SouthWest London Paranormal, although most of group had a fair bit of experience with other groups - some of it good, some not so good.
Chertsey Museum is situated just off the main High Street of Chertsey. A small quaint town situated not far from the River Thames, nestled between the larger towns of Egham, Addlestone and Staines. Chertsey is one of the oldest towns in England. It originally grew around Chertsey Abbey which was founded in 666 A.D. The abbey is now a ruin, but is not far from the museum. Before it became a museum it was a Public House , as well as a family home. It was also the home of a local doctor, and many people have come and gone over the years - or have they? It is now a Grade II listed building.
If you have never been to Chertsey Museum then we would suggest a trip there. It is a pleasant, friendly and a welcoming place. The staff are more than helpful, and for our night of investigation, we were met by Sally and Roz, who were the nicest people you could possibly meet and made us more than welcome.

The group met at the museum at 7.00 pm. Surprisingly for the time of year, the weather was mild and upon entering the building, our usually attire of coats, gloves etc could be discarded for the night.
There were three areas that we were to cover:
* Ground Floor - cafe, displays, exhibits and the cellar
* 1st Floor
* 2nd Floor - offices
As we were a small group, we were able to stay as one team, also joined by Sally from the museum.

Ground Floor
We started the investigation in the Dress Room. The reading from the EMF meter was normal. There was also no fluctuations in the room temperature, which remained constant. The group formed a circle and Jim called out to the spirits. Nicky said she felt someone touch her. The room temperature was checked again, and was found to be 3 degrees lower then when we had entered the room.
Still forming the circle, Jim sensed that a lady was present, but she would not speak. He described her as being slim and about 5'10. She was dressed in a long tight fitting dress, which went right up to her neck. (There were many dresses on display within this room, but Jim acknowledge that none fitted the description the lady was wearing). The dress looked gold or silver and slightly flared at the bottom. Jim believed that she must have be the lady of the house during her time, and now appeared very sad, as she walked up and down the ground floor.
Jim also picked up something to do with shipping, but nothing more than that. Mac and a couple of other people thought they had seen something in the corner of the room. Jane felt someone had touched her also on her neck. A few other people starting itching, predominately around their face or head. Jim added that he was given the word "scurvy". Perhaps the sign of why some were scratching.
Following this, the group went into other rooms on the ground floor, but no activity could be found, so it was decided to split into groups of 2 or 3 people and each to enter into different rooms.
The team that had investigated the cellar (Jane, Mac and Lin) had the most activity. At first the room felt fine. They began to call out when they heard a noise behind them - the sound of a box being moved and then the room went cold. The shock of the sound, made them jump and shout, which was heard by the other smaller group, who then all left their vigils to find out what had occurred. Being told what had happen, Jim, Alison and Stewart then joined this group and returned to the cellar. There was no further movement or sound, but they did agree they could feel a cold spot.
When the group returned back to base. Roz who had been working in the reception area said that during our time away, she had heard footsteps coming towards the reception.

Ist Floor
We began the investigation of the first floor in a room which was full of paintings. As soon as we entered the room, Jim felt that we were being watched from the doorway of the other room just adjacent to this room. (Sally later told us that this was something she had often felt whilst she was working up here.)
Both Jim and Sue felt uncomfortable in this room. Jim felt that the painting hanging up on the wall were all wrong, and he had the urge to rip them down. It was as if the spirits didn't like what was being displayed and wanted the original paintings put back.
After forming a circle, it wasn't long before Jim started picking up on things. Nicky and some of the others said it looked like there were lots of faces in front of Jim and that his face was beginning to change. He then began to pick up on a man which he believed followed Sally around during the time she was at work here. He wore a top hat and he felt his mannerism were very gentlemanly. He followed her around, because she reminded him of someone. Jim continued by adding, the situation felt like an upstairs/downstairs state of affairs.
Jim was then told of a lady that was around this area, she was wearing a long dress, but was a totally different lady from the one that he had encountered downstairs. Sally asked if he could see the colour of her dress, to which he replied blue and red. He also started to pick up on people who had received medical help, and others in the room expressed they could smell anaesthetic.
(Sally did confirm at this point, that a doctor had one lived in the house many years ago, however this was his home and not his place of work, as far as she knew). Jim believed that the doctor had carried out some of his work here. He could see what looked to be tools belonging to the doctor, they resembled the instruments dating around the early 1900's. Jim then received two names; Robert - whom he said wanted to go home and also a gentleman by the name of Charles.
When asked how many spirits were believed to be in the room, Jim replied that there was at least 10. Mac took a photo of Jim and was amazed to see, what appeared to be a shape of a face on Jim's chest. At this point, Jim went into a trance and began to act strange. Jane asked if he was happy, but no answer was given. Someone in the group said that they could smell sick. Jim then started to act as if he was drunk, by staggering on the spot and giggling.
Mac then asked "Are you going to tell us who you are?" and then declared that she could see a glow around Sally.
Jim, still in a trance and speaking via another spirit said "Yes, he is always there"

Question: "Who Robert?"
Question: "Can you tell us your name?" Question: It's it because I'm a woman, perhaps you would like to talk to Stewart? Question: "Are you proud? You look proud from the way you are standing?" Question: "Were you in the Army?" Question: "Were you a gentleman?" Question: "How old are you?" |
Answer: "Yes, he is a flirt.
Answer: "Questions, questions" No answer was given Answer: "Yes of course" Answer: Yes, I was an officer No answer given. No answer given. |
Jim then began to come round and declared that it was starting to get silly now, as there were so many spirits trying to get though. It was best, at this stage to take a break. Sue said she was beginning to feel very agitated and like Jim, she didn't like this room at all.
As the group was leaving the room a light anomaly was seen moving in front of Jim and Sue. (This was later seen on the video that was been filmed at the time).
Following on from the painting room the group moved into another room off the main corridor. This room resembled a nursery, a small rocking horse was in the middle of the room and other children's toys were placed around. Several people commented that they could see a mist within the room.
Once the whole group had assembled in the room, Jim began to call out to the spirit, in a humerous Irish accent, for some reason. Apologises made, he tried again, but each time he called out he emanated the Irish lingo. This was the first time this had happened to him and he was unsure as to why this was occuring. He then picked up on two children, a boy by the name of Thomas and a young girl called Claire. He was beginning to feel a lot of pain in his chest and felt that the small boy may have died here and possibly upstairs on the 2nd floor.
Mac asked Thomas "How old are you?", but we received no answer. She continued "Do you like playing games?" we then thought we heard a reply of "hmmm".
Jim then said he could smell something. He then felt angry and asked Sally if there ever was a music box in this room. Sally confirmed there had been one for ages behind where Jim was standing, but had been removed since.
Mac called out to the children again and asked them to come and play with us. We rolled a ball around, but nothing happened. Mac asked Jim if he knew what year he thought the children were from and he believed they were here in the early 1900's.
Jim said he felt once again, that we were all being watched from the other room and that somebody was standing behind Sally again. Sue thought she saw a light on her hand. Most people then declared that their hands were itching, but unsure as to why. Jim could see Sally, or a person like Sally, dressed up in full costume, but something was different, perhaps the hair - it was being worn differently. Sally remarked that sometime she does dress up in older costume for particular day events that take place here, but she always worn her hair the same each day and did not wear anything in her hair.
Jim began to complain about pains in his neck, he said it felt red hot, but had no reasonable explanation why this was. Following this, the group felt we had spent enough time here and decided to move on. During the investigation, there were some names that meant nothing to Sally and we had no connection to the names: Charles, Elizabeth and Callum.
Sally did confirm later, that a young boy and girl had been brought into the house when the doctor was there. They had been knocked over by a horse and cart It was too late however, and they both died in the house. She didn't believe the children had been taken upstairs, but had remained downstairs. Sally also confirmed that the place had once been a pub or inn and run by a man called Robert.

2nd Floor
The last part of the night was spent investigating the top floor. This area consisted of small offices and due to the limited space, the group had to be split down into two teams. Jim took a group into one of office's and they began to do some table tipping. This proved fruitless with nothing coming through. The team heard no unusual noises during this time and the only unusual occurrence was, in one part of the room the temperature dropped and it became very cold, with no reasonable explanation. The other team, situated in one of the other office's did not experience anything at all.
Due to the lack of activity on the 2nd floor, the group decided to pack up for the night. On the way down to the ground floor, some of the group decided to check the staff toilets, which was situated just of the stairways between the 1st and ground floor. As the group descended the stairs Jim stopped and expressed an unusual feeling. He felt he wanted to go over the top of the bannister or fall down the flight of stairs. He believed that someone in the household died as a result of something to do with the stairs.
Sally confirmed that someone had indeed fallen down the stairs, not from the top floor, but from the staff toilet area down. Following this confirmation the team stood quietly and called out. But were unable to pick anything up.
The group felt that it had been a very successful night. Sally was able to confirm a lot of what was picked up. We would like to confirm, at this point, that Sally had not told any members of the team the history of the people who dwelled in this house, and no prior research was carried out.
Once again we would like to thank both Sally and Roz for their help and for making us all feel very welcome on the night. The event was enjoyed by all the team members.

Photo
Mac took this photo of Jim. Can you see anything on his chest? Many have noticed a face and some have not. We will leave you to judge.
There were other photos taken, but nothing other than a few alleged Orbs. We did get some great sounds that could not be explained from the EVP, and also captured some light anomalies on tape.
Below are some of the best EVP sounds that we picked up on the night.
The recorder was left and there was no one on this floor whist it was recording, two of them sound like a ball dropping, but you decide.
