Basing House - Basingstoke
Investigation Date: 21 April 2012
The earliest visible features at Basing House today are the huge circular bank (or ringwork) and defensive ditches of a castle built in the 1100s by the de Port family, who arrived with William the Conqueror in the Norman invasion of 1066. It was on top of these castle remains that Sir William Paulet, the first Marquess of Winchester and Lord Treasurer of England, chose to build his new house in 1535.
When first built it was the largest private house in the country with around 360 rooms, and in its heyday was frequently visited by the monarchs of the day including Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Philip II of Spain and Queen Mary I who honeymooned there in 1554 after their marriage in nearby Winchester
Basing House and the Civil War When the English Civil War broke out in 1642, England was divided between the Royalist, and often Catholic, supporters of King Charles I and those who favored a more powerful Parliament, mainly Protestants.
At this time Basing House was owned by John Paulet, the fifth Marquess of Winchester. He lived up to his family motto "Aymez Loyaulte" (Love Loyalty) and supported the king.
Basing House Under Siege Basing House was attacked by Parliamentary troops on three occasions. The final assault came in August 1645 when 800 men took up position around the walls. The garrison held out, despite further reinforcements to the attacking force, until Oliver Cromwell himself arrived with heavy artillery. By 13 October 1645 the walls of the house had been breached.

The Report
The team had been worried about the poor weather conditions prior to the investigation and they arrived with more rain forecast. We already had problems, with the venue host informing us that we could not investigate the main barn unless we paid extra for this. It would not have been a problem if they had told us before we had booked.
The vast grounds had many reported paranormal sightings and we had been looking forward to this investigation for some time. It was not easy to mark off vigils areas, but we were able to investigate the Ban, Graveyard, The Tudor House ruins and the Old Norman Fort ruins as well.
Jim asked if anyone feels anything as they were drawn to a different part of the barn, The K2 meter began to flash, we double checked that nothing had affected it and even placed it near the speaker and nothing happened. We checked the alarm, but again the K2 meter was not picking up anything. However, in the middle of the barn it started flashing, this meant it was picking up an energy, we could see no other reason for this, other than the energy of a spirit being near the meter. Tina saw someone that looked very tall behind Jane and Jim also felt there was a tall man walking around. Jim then split the group into two separate teams.
The Barn
Due to the host not informing us that the barn was extra money, we only had an hour here. Having split into two teams – Jane, Carol and Tina took the dowsing rods and went to one end of the barn. Jim, Kirsty, Janet, Helen, Mac and Nikki started a séance.
Left end of the barn, far corner as you enter.
Jane calls out using the dowsing rods and asked for them to cross for yes. Carol feels that at least 6 spirits nearby. Jane calls out and the rods confirm there is a spirit present.
Question: “Are you a male?” Answer: “No”
Jane asks if the spirit that she felt behind her is there. Only one rod moves. Tina feels that something is lost and Jane asks; again only the right rod moves. Tina says something to Jane and Jane asks “Were you shot in the chest?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Was it the Civil War?” Answer “Yes” very strongly
Question: “Is it you affecting Carol?” No answer
Jane asks “How old he was” and received an answer that he was in his thirties.
Carol picks up on a man who is short and hunched and get the name Jack. Jane asks if this is correct and the rods go to Yes.
Question: “Are you affecting Carol?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Jack, were you in the war?”
Carol gets a name that sounds like Ridgeway. Jane asked “Is this your name” and the answer came back “Yes”
They try and get a year, but with no success.
Carol says that he worked the land and this was confirmed, however not sure if it was a different spirit at this point.
They then get the name Peter and when Jane asks him to point the rods to where he is, they point right in front of her. Carol picks up on a female spirit called Marie. Jane asks “If she is happy here?” There was no answer. Carol continues and says she is buried in the graveyard there – this is confirmed by the rods. She asks “Is Jack you father?” the answer is “No”. “Is her your husband?” Answer: “No” Carol then sees a picture, with many people in it, but it is unclear on the recording. It appears she is afraid of Jack. Jane asks Marie “If she would like to leave?” and the rods move to “Yes”. They tell her that they will return later with the rest of the team to help her.
We found that the speakers were making some sort of a feedback sound. Jim felt heavy when he was closer to the end of the barn, as if there was a pressure pushing down on him.
At the other end of the barn there was Jim, Mac, Helen, Nikki, Janet and Kirsty
Nikki feels colder this end which is to the right as you enter, yet it is the same barn and the other end is where the door is. We decide to start a séance and Jim calls out. He asks for any spirit person there to push or touch one of us. Janet starts to move back and forth. Jim suggests that we try a human pendulum with Janet being pushed forward for yes and pulled back for no.
Question: “Are you a male spirit?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you work here? Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are there any other spirits here with us?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are there more than 5?” Answer: “Yes”
Some are feeling very warm around their backs and shoulders. Helen picks up on a lad wearing a cap.
Question: “Is this young man the one pushing Janet? Answer: “No”
Question: “Is it the young man moving Kirsty’s legs?” Answer: “Yes” For sometime Kirsty seemed to have a problem standing on her feet, her legs are twisted and at one point she is on tiptoe.Question: “Are you related to this young man?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you father and son?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Is your son too young to work here?” Answer: “Yes”
Helen and Jim pick up at the same time that this young man, the son, had died of ill health. This was confirmed with a yes from the father. After a few questions Jim and Helen were able to get a rough time when they died as 1030. We asked if the child had a disability, by the way Kirsty’s legs were bending all over the place. This was confirmed as a yes by the father.
Jim asks “If he was a grounds man?” Answer: “No”
Question: “Do you have something like rickets?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you have another son?” Answer: “No”
Helen and Jim picked up on a girl who was the daughter.
Question: “Did she die of natural causes?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you die of natural causes?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Your son is very playful” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are you happy here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Will we meet other spirits here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “We picked up on a tall man, is he here?” Answer: “Yes”
Jim asked if he can touch someone else in the circle and the spirit replied “Yes”
(For some reason there was a lot of interference with the recording and some of it became unclear. This was strange as we never moved and nor did the recorder.) Question: “Does your son try and play with the children that come here?” No answer.
Nikki asks “If there is someone behind here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Is it a male spirit?” Answer: “Yes”
A flash of light is seen in the circle by some members of the group. Jim asks “Was that a spirit that did that?” Answer: “Yes”. Helen is now being pushed back and forth and Nikki is given a big push that takes her almost into the middle of the circle.
We are now joined by the other members, but after a short time we decide to move down the other end of the barn where Jane had said she would get help for Marie.
We started a séance and Jim called her forward, but it seemed she was too scared of Jack to come into the circle. So sadly because of the time we were unable to help her. A shadow is seen by Jim and Jane during the séance and it appears to be a large man.
After a break we decide to check the grounds out before it gets dark. The team was gathered by the first of the ruins which would have been the wine cellar under the main hall when Jane tells Mac to stop pushing her. Mac was not near her and Jane explained that it was like someone kicking her heels to make her fall down the steps. For periods of the investigation most of the team said they could hear gunfire and the sound of metal, like a sword fight. There was also a smell of burning that we could smell throughout the night. As the medium of the group I have to wonder at this – was this real or was it the power of suggestion working here.
Jim had a feeling of being trapped and slaughter. Kirsty felt as if there was a knife cutting her face. Jane feels someone touching her face and using the dowsing rods she asks the question and receives a “Yes” as a reply.
Question: “Are you a male?”
Question: “Are you a female?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Were there people slaughtered here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Did you work in the kitchen/wine cellar?” Answer: “Yes” the rods moved very strongly.
Question: “Were you killed here in the fighting?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Was this to do with Oliver Cromwell?” No movement from the rods
Jane feels as if someone is standing right next to her, as her leg is very hot.
Jim decides to move on, as things were now stopping from anyone talking to us.
We were told that many bones were found when they did the dig on the site and they were all buried in one place, so it was decided to visit that area. As soon as we got there Jim was overwhelmed with the feelings of hundreds of spirits all coming towards him and all trying to speak at once.
The K2 meter was constantly flashing and we could hear movement around us. It could have been an animal, but we didn’t think so and we moved closer to the wall. During a séance Jim needed to move the circle, which they did. It was as though he was looking for a resting place.
Every time we called out there seemed to be a strong breeze going through the circle, this could have just been the wind, but it only happened when a question was asked. We asked for all the spirits present to step into the circle and the K2 meter started flashing. Jim could see a spirit child come between two of the team and there was a feeling of being touched. He asked the child to move closer to the K2 meter and said that he could feel someone touch his hand and Jane was also becoming very cold. Jim gets the name Joseph or Joe. There is a feeling that the child has moved us to where his father is buried.
A couple of the team believe they keep seeing movement around the tree, so they all move to that area and begin to use the dowsing rods. Some of team are feeling strange.
Question: “Is there more than one spirit here?” Answer: “Yes” the rods moved very strongly.
Question: “Can you show us where you are?” The rods move all around and there is a feeling that they are all around us.
Question: “Are there any female spirits here?” Answer: “Yes”
Question: “Are there any spirits that would like to leave here and join your loved ones?” Answer: “Yes”
Jim asked the spirits to go to the K2 meter and the green light moved to orange. He asked again and this time the lights went right up to the red. Jim explained what we are going to do and asked if that was OK – the rods go to yes. This was some of the best evidence of the night so far.
We started a séance around the tree and call out for the spirits to come forward. Jim is told they don’t like our hands joined, so they stop. A strong feeling is felt by Mac like someone coming into the circle and Tina comes over a little funny for a moment. Jim asks them to step away from Tina and they come to him.
Jim feels like he is being lifted and is on his tiptoes. He goes very quiet and then collapses, just missing the tree. He is OK, but drained, he felt there was just so many wanting to leave it became too much for him to do in one go.
Jim still wasn’t back completely and feels they need to help more. Carol confirmed there were 1000’s of them and too many for him. Jim is upset and emotional. The team decide to move Jim out of the area and close the circle down. Jim is reluctant to leave at one point, but he is OK. The recorder was picking up strange sounds, but not clear enough to say what it is. Once clear of the area, Jim is back to his normal self and they decide to take a break.
Our next stop was the front of the fort and the fort itself. Jim asks everybody to stand still and see if they can focus on a sound they may hear. Jane and some of the other hear screaming and the sound of voices, the noise of swords and there was a feeling that a battle took place over and over again. We know that this could be in our mind, but there were more than a few said the same things at different times.A couple of the group could see blood running down the faces of some of the team. They are then drawn to the area where the attacking forces were said to have entered the fort. This is where we felt most of the noise was coming from; this was the place that is known as the end for Basing House. We had smelt burning most of the night, but could see nothing and now there was a smell of someone cooking.
After a further break we decided to try a different area, noises are heard as if we were being followed, but it could have been a fox. We walked around with the same feeling of being watched, this could be just the feeling of the place, rather than anything paranormal. Jim had the feeling of monks being nearby, but there was no reason that we could see on why this would be the case.
We tried an area that was at the bottom of the ruins and started a séance. We picked on someone who seemed to have been in charge. We were not welcome her and he wanted us to leave. We really had strong feelings that we were being watch and Carol said he did not want to talk to us and he just wanted us to leave. We tried some more, but were getting nowhere, so we did decide to leave the area.
We tried one last place which was the gardens, here we picked up on children and they seemed to be playing. Jane tried the dowsing rods which told her there were five children here and Jim picked up on someone who would have been in charge of them, like a governess. The children seemed to be happy and were picked up by Jim, Helen and Carol.
Conclusion
We all enjoyed Basing House and thank our host. We must say things could have been better from them with regards to their information, but it all worked out OK. We had expected to spend more time in the barn, which was disappointing, but we found there was more to do then we realise.
It was very easy to get lost at time and as you walked around you could feel and hear the action of the battle or could you? We did feel at times that we heard many things that sounded like a battle, but it could have just as easily been the atmosphere or our active imagination.
I would recommend the venue and it is well worth the visit so you can find out for yourself. Would I go back? Yes, I guess so. I feel there is more work to do there and the very clear photo of the lady in the Barn was very good and worth a second visit with a longer time in the Barn.

Had a great night at Basing House. There was lots of activity and I felt like we were being watched and followed all the time. We heard a lot of different noises like canon’s, drums, shouting and screaming. There was a lot of upset around plus spirits not wanting to leave. Would I go back – I’m not sure. I feel the spirits there just wanted to be left alone. All in all I thought it was a great night and a great location.
Jim Arnold
Our first trip to Basing House, as a medium I found the place very active. We were followed and there were many strange sounds, but I also have to ask myself how much of the sounds we feel and we heard were down to our imagination and history of the place. We did pick up on many spirits who seemed to not want to leave. At one point I found too many who wanted to leave that I could not cope with it.
Would I go back there – No. For me it was an OK location, but not one I would want to return back to, although we knew there were spirits present there, but very little evidence to prove it.
Helen Gell
Very good night. Basing House is fascinating with a lot to tell us. Shame Mr Cromwell burnt it down! But it’s full of spirits and activity, so much going on it could be a little overwhelming at times. There wasn’t a moment when you weren’t being followed and watched even in the loos! Although there were a lot a spirits that didn’t want to leave, there were plenty that did. I wouldn’t mind going back again and I will not wear willies next time though – I thought my toes were going to drop off, they were so cold!

I liked it here and also felt very strongly the feeling of being followed. I couldn’t hear the sounds others picked up on (a skill I hope will develop in time) but I was certainly surprised when a child spirit kept pushing me forward and twisted my legs up into funny angles as if I had rickets. I also got an image in my mind at the same time, of a child with very deformed limbs...very, very emotional investigation at times and well done team for sticking together!
I really enjoyed this location - you could hear foot steps behind you and feel eyes on you almost the entire time. I thought the barn area wouldn’t turn up very much, but we experienced quite a lot, including Janet being used as a human pendulum to answer questions and my legs being made to twist round into strange positions - I also got the mental image of a child with rickets at the same time. Could he have been trying to physically show us the painful condition he had? Got a good photo of who we believe might be the lady of the house in the barn too. Also a great deal of sadness in the garden where lots of souls are buried, and the feeling of not being wanted in certain areas of the grounds. Nikki seemed to have a spirit that attached himself to her in order to leave the kitchen where he was hiding as too young and frightened to fight - again pleased that the team were also able to help this spirit although I think poor Nikki was a bit shocked! I am not sure if I would go back, but it was fantastic that Jim was able to help some of the lost souls there to cross over.

I think we all enjoyed Basing House. Everyone felt or heard spirit in each location. Very interesting place.

Fantastic investigation, so much history and lost souls. Had a very strange experience that I'm still trying to convince myself that it happened; you got the feeling of being watched and followed. The way I feel at the moment I don't think I would like to go back, due to the fact of my personal experience, thank guys for a great time and so sorry for my odd behaviour!!! I can definitely say team you all have each other’s backs when someone is in trouble!! Thank you all again.

Basing House was very active we were all touched by the emotions picked up during the investigation. I heard cannon fire, screaming and along with another member of the team saw a shadow walking up and down behind a tree. When we moved the k2 meter and ourselves over to the area to conduct a séance, we got good evidence that we were not alone. Although I really enjoyed the location I don’t think i would go back there. But all in all another great investigation with a great team of people brilliant night guys

Had a great investigation at Basing House last weekend with Southwest London Paranormal Group. Great team and thank god the weather was good as the forecast was looking really bad. We managed to have a walk around the grounds during daylight which was really helpful as there were many ditches and slopping hills.
Whilst walking through the grounds we were brought to the area were apparently all the bodies which were found were placed to rest - altogether in an enclosed area and no markings to confirm as such. However we all went into the garden and immediately all felt uneasy and felt very sad. As for the rest of the fort and the old house, we all heard different noises and had feeling of being watched all night. Great place to go and a really great team and also Jim Arnold our Medium for the night.
